Your First Christmas

Guess what, Kayleigh Grace?

It's your very first Christmas!

You may not understand much about it this year...

But Daddy and I are looking forward to celebrating our favorite Christmas traditions with you as you grow up.

(not that there is any hurry, sweet one)

Merry Christmas, Kayleigh Girl!

We love you!

Baking Thoughts

Dear Kayleigh,

Today, I put you in the Moby so that I could hold you "hands-free" and do some baking. It's finally starting to feel like Autumn around here, and I've been itching to do something pumpkiny.

It worked out wonderfully. You're always happy to be held, and we sang and danced to internet radio while I mixed and measured. It made me wonder how long it will be until you're asking to measure things out and sneaking licks of batter.

One of the songs that played today was "Music of the Night," and it made me think about taking you to see Phantom of the Opera someday. Daddy and I have talked about it before. That was a special gift from my parents when I was a teen, and Daddy and I went to see it the first year we were married. It holds a special place in my heart, and I want to share that with you someday!

But for today, you are just my sweet little Munchkin.

And, oh, how I love you!

Forever and always,
Mom

One Month

Dear Kayleigh Grace,

Today, you are one month old!

You grow more and more beautiful every day. And it's all going by so fast.

Daddy and I love every dimple, roll, and inch of you. Our precious baby girl!

Today is also what would have been my Papa Chuck's 87th birthday. I wish you could have met him. He would have loved you to bits. I can imagine the sound of his hearty chuckle as he laughed at your cute antics. I promise to tell you lots of stories about him.

One month, Munchkin. I can't believe that we've already been holding you, loving you, enjoying you for four whole weeks already. It's flown by so quickly that all of the sudden, I feel like I'm grasping at the days and trying to hold onto them. I don't want to believe that your first year will fly by quickly...but now that we're already 1/12 of the way into it, I know with a pang that it will. So I'm cherishing every moment! I don't want to miss any little bit.

Stay as sweet as you are, Baby Girl.

We love you!

Love, Mom

September 27th

Dear Kayleigh,

The day after you were born, I turned 25. What a way to celebrate!

Auntie Em and Uncle Arlen came first thing in the morning to celebrate your birthday and mine.

Auntie Em and I have been friends since we were five years old. After being playmates for so many years, we are thrilled to have you--our very own live baby doll!

Auntie Kate showed up with a birthday banner and Jamba Juice for us.

A little while later, Grammy and Papa came, bringing birthday pie for all. Oh, happy day!

Then, we got ready to bring you home. We were so excited!

You looked so sweet it your "Brand New" pink outfit.

You had quite the parade! Mom, Dad, nurse Anna, Papa, Grammy, and Kate all escorted you to your first time outside.

Some very happy parents!

All ready to go home!

Remember the pansies we told you about? They were there waiting for you when we arrived home.
So was a "Welcome Home Kayleigh!" sign made by Auntie Kate, Papa, and Grammy.

Grammy made strogonoff--my favorite!--for my birthday dinner.
Getting to share my birthday with you was the most wonderful thing ever, Kayleigh Girl.

Here's to many more! I love you, Munchkin!

Your Birth Story

Dear Kayleigh,

Three weeks ago at this time, a nurse was telling me that the pain I was feeling wasn't contractions. "If you're still smiling, there's no way you're having contractions."

But I was, and five hours later, you were born. I was just too excited to be so close to meeting you. Pain just couldn't keep the smile from my face.

What a journey we had getting you to enter the world! I'm so thankful for how everything went...in the end, it turned out being much smoother than I anticipated.

On Sunday night, September 25th, Daddy and I went out for our last
meal together before you were born. I had to fast for the induction, so I knew that dinner was the last thing I'd get to eat until I was holding you in my arms.

It was funny to tell our server at the restaurant that we were heading to the hospital to have our baby that night. That certainly got a reaction :-) She even brought us a birthday dessert--for you and me, since our birthdays would either be a day apart or on the same day.

Before we left for the hospital that night, I cried. Suddenly, with our bags all around us in the middle of our bedroom, I realized that my husband and I would be bringing a new family member home with us. And how could I love anyone as much as I love him? Daddy will always be my first love, but as soon as you were born, I understood that the love in my heart didn't have to be split between two people. It multiplied to have the capacity to love you with all my heart, and love my husband twice as much as I already did. Isn't love amazing?

When we got to the hospital, we met Jenny, our night nurse. She was a no-nonsense mothering type who actually sat and visited with us for an hour before giving me the induction medication. Here it was, 1:30 in the morning, and she was giving us parenting advice when all I wanted to do was curl up and fall asleep! We told her how you had gone transverse a few weeks ago and how we had done everything we could to flip you around again so that we wouldn't have to do a c-section. Jenny leaned in and told us that the doctor who would be on deliveries that day was "c-section happy" and would use any excuse to do one. "Unless something is really wrong, you hold your ground. You're a grown woman, and you can tell a doctor 'no,'" She said.

Around 2:15, she finally gave me a cup of water and a pill, hooked me up to heart rate and blood pressure monitors, and then closed the door behind herself. Dad pulled the couch close to my bed, and he held my hand while we both tried to get some sleep. By 3am, the medicine was kicking in and the pain was keeping me awake. By 4am, the pain was making me throw up. Jenny came back in at 7am to see how I was doing, and that's when she told me that if I was still smiling, I wasn't having contractions. "Those are just cramps," She said, "When you have a contraction, you'll know you're having a contraction!" Not very comforting...

The nurses switched around 7:30, and then we met Carolyn, our day nurse. She was so sweet and cheerful. She asked what your name would be, and wrote it on a dry-erase board near my bed so that we could see it and remember how close we were to meeting you.

At 8:30, I realized that Daddy hadn't left my side since I was admitted at 1am, and he must be getting hungry. I told him that I was fine and that he could go to the cafeteria and get something to eat. While he was gone, Dr. Morales came in to check me for the first time. Carolyn offered to hold my hand while he examined me, and when Dr. Morales said that I was 3 centimeters dilated and completely effaced, Carolyn squeezed my hand, jumped in the air, and said, "I'm so happy for you!" I loved her to bits!

Right away, Dr. Morales broke my water and said that we could start the epidural. I quickly texted Dad to let him know the good news and to ask him to come back for the epidural. Needles give me the willies.

Dad came back with the biggest smile on his face. Neither of us had expected things to move so quickly. I had been afraid that I wouldn't progress at all without pitocin, and here we were, well on our way to having our baby!

The anesthesiologist, a small, kind man with a heavy accent, came in. Within minutes, the gut-wrenching contractions subsided until they were barely noticeable. Sweet relief! The difference in the level of pain made me think, "Wow! If I had an epidural every time, we could have 20 kids!" (Don't worry...I changed my mind!)

I felt so good that I was able to close my eyes and take a much-needed nap. I hadn't slept since Sunday morning, so I was pretty tired.

45 minutes later, though, painful contractions woke me up. I was confused. Wasn't that not supposed to happen with an epidural? Carolyn called the anesthesiologist back in, and he checked the iv and decided to administer another vial of the drug. "It must be because you are so tall," He commented as he fidgeted with something behind me. That second vial didn't help, either, and he kept coming back in to administer more. All in all, he gave me five doses of the stuff. We were all confused about the ineffectiveness of the epidural until I tried to get more comfortable in bed. I accidentally hit Carolyn as I tried to grab the bed rail to shift myself. "I'm so sorry," I apologized. She just looked at me and said that I hadn't hit her...I had whacked myself in the leg. It was then that I realized that I couldn't feel my right leg. At all. Guess where all of the epidural medicine had gone?

What a strange feeling it is to be in pain everywhere except for one leg! It was completely dead. I couldn't move my toes or lift my leg at all. So much for the epidural! (But you know what? It's empowering to know that I did it. I don't think I'll ever turn down an epidural when it's offered to me, but knowing that I can give birth without an effective epidural makes me feel like a bit of a superwoman!)

At 11:30, I was 5 cm dilated. By 12:30 when Carolyn checked me again, she nearly fell over. "No wonder you were in so much pain," She said, "You're at 10 cm! You just made 5 cm in an hour!" With that, she said that I was ready to push. She had me push three times, and then realized that you were coming so fast that she needed to call the doctor and let him know we were ready. Dr. Morales was delivering another baby, so we had to wait.

At one point, when Carolyn checked me, she said, "I can see Kayleigh's head! It looks like you're going to have a bald baby!" Dad and I were surprised. We both have so much hair; we hadn't expected you to be bald! We laughed though and told Carolyn that you must be following in your Aunt Laura's footsteps (she was bald until she was three years old!) At one point, though, we heard her say, "Oh, wait! Those are eyebrows! Your baby is coming forehead first!"

Forehead first. Oh, Kayleigh, you little trouble maker! First you decide to try the transverse thing, and then you make up your mind that you want to enter the world face up, seeing everything you can. (We still love you!)

When Dr. Morales came in at 12:55, Carolyn told him that you were brow presenting in the anterior position. Immediately, he came to me and said, "We may need to do a c-section. I'm going to have the OR get ready." And Kayleigh, just then, I was the most strong-willed I may have ever been. I told him no. "If nothing is wrong with the baby or me, I want to proceed naturally. I didn't go through 11 hours of labor just to give up in the end," I told him. Dad squeezed my hand with a, "You go, girl!" look in his smile.

The doctor backed down, and we started to push. Even now when I think back to it, I can't believe I really did that. You came out of my body. What a miracle.

Your dad was the perfect birthing coach. He was so encouraging the whole time. It was the most amazing experience we've been through together.

20 minutes later, we were holding you in our arms. Our precious Kayleigh Grace.

My heart overflows as I think back to the first moment we held you. All of our love, physically represented in one tiny bundle. There is so much love shared between the three of us, Kayleigh Girl. I hope you always feel it.

There you were, 8 lbs, 6 oz, and a ton of curly hair. Were they ever wrong about you being bald!

Since you were born "brow presenting," you came out with a forward-facing conehead. We called you our little unicorn. It went away within a few hours of your birth, but the bruises and scrapes on your face from your awkward face-up journey didn't. Poor baby. But you couldn't have been more beautiful to us.

After all of these months of waiting, so many nights spent in prayer for your health and growth, so many days of dreaming what life would be like once you arrived...you are here. Our sweet Kayleigh Grace. We love you so much!

One Week Old

Dear Kayleigh,

Our precious little girl is one week old today. My heart bursts just thinking about it. In seven days, you have brought Daddy and me more joy than we could have anticipated. We love you so much, Baby Girl, and even though we couldn't imagine eight days ago what it would be like to have you in our arms, now we can't imagine life without you.

I'm looking forward to writing out your birth story, but right now, I just want to share some of the pictures I took of you today, and some of the things I've come to love about you this week.

♥ I love the contented little sighs you make when you're curled up in someone's arms.
♥ I love the precious little smiles that sweeten your dreams.
♥ I love the way your tiny monkey toes curl around my finger when I touch the bottom of your foot.
♥ I love how curly your hair is right after bathtime.
♥ I love the way you nuzzle into me when you nurse.
♥ I love that your lips are so much like mine, but your smile is all your daddy's.
♥ I love the way you cry. You have this adorable little squeak as you take in your breath, and it's just too cute for words!
♥ I love the way you smell.
♥ I love that you can sleep through anything.
♥ I love the little grumpy face you make when you're not sure about something. You've got Uncle Jon's eyebrows down pat.
♥ I love seeing the expressions of our family members as they marvel at you.
♥ I love that you love to be held, but also understand when Mommy or Daddy needs to put you down.
♥ I love how closely you watch us as we sing to you.
♥ I love pulling you into bed with me for a midnight nurse.
♥ I love the way you look in pink (which is a good thing, because that's pretty much all you own!)
♥ I love the way you calm down immediately when you hear Daddy's voice.
♥ I love it when Daddy and I get to take you to a new place for the first time (so far, you've only been to Tyler and Stacey's house, Target, and church, but there's much more to come!)
♥ I love watching you sleep.
♥ I love how tiny and delicate your fingers are.
♥ I love how excited you are to see me when you're hungry (and I'm looking forward to you loving me with no strings attached eventually!)
♥ I love that your diaper noises startle even you on occasion.
♥ I love watching Daddy interact with you. He loves you so much...it makes my heart burst.
♥ I love that you can hold a pacifier to your face with your hand...you smart cookie, you!
♥ I love how you try to be such a big girl already. You lift your head and look around and already make me panic over how quickly you're growing up.
♥ I love giving you kisses.
♥ I love the way you keep your hands up by your face--just like you did for all of our ultrasounds.
♥ I love your chubby cheeks.
♥ I love looking over at you in the cradle in the middle of the night and seeing your sweet, peaceful, dreaming face.
♥ I love knowing that you're a piece of me and Daddy. I feel privileged that I get to watch you grow up and I'm looking forward to seeing who you become.

You bring us so much joy already, sweet girl, I can't wait to see what the future brings.

I love you, Kayleigh Grace!

Heartbeat

Dear Kayleigh,

I stayed home from church this morning. Dad and I are heading to the hospital around midnight tonight, and after our sleepless night on Friday, you and I need all the rest we can get today.

I've been dozing on the couch on and off since Dad left. You've been pretty peaceful this morning, too. Every once in a while, you stir, and I put my hand on my tummy where I can see the rise of your body, and I cherish having you inside of me. Not for long, Baby Girl!

I'm amazed right now, though, because the way you are positioned, I can feel your heartbeat! What an incredible thing! Daddy and I have heard your heartbeat so many times at the doctor's office, but I never really imagined that I would be able to feel your heartbeat with my hand while you're inside of me. There it is, though, a tiny but strong little beat.

I love listening to your daddy's heartbeat. It's one of the most soothing things in the world to me. We've always laughed about the difference between our pulses. Mine is so faint that sometimes I can't feel it even when I look for it. Dad's is so strong that you can feel it resonate through your body when he hugs you. I love curling up next to him and placing my head on his chest. I can't sit like that, though, when we watch movies, because I can't hear the dialogue over his heart!

I love thinking about the comfort you will feel when you're held by him. He's such an amazing daddy already...I can't wait to see the peace on your face as you sleep in his arms this week.

The changes our little family is going through are amazing us! Dad and I keep saying to each other "Hey, guess what? Tomorrow, we're having a baby!" It doesn't even seem real. How can it be that for 9 months, I've carried you inside of me...but I can hardly believe that we'll actually be meeting you within hours?

Tomorrow, we'll be watching your heart on the fetal monitor...and the next day, I'll be holding you in my arms with your heart beating against mine.

We are so excited, Sweet Kayleigh Grace. So blessed and joyful. Our little girl is coming home.

Love, Mom

The Baby Red Zone

Howdy Kayleigh girl,

We are so excited!  You have no idea (how could you?) just how much your mother and I are looking forward to having you in our arms soon.  There are so many thing we can't wait to do with you, places to take you and people we want you to meet.  We are so close to getting to do all of those things that we are ready to go to the hospital at the drop of a hat.

Something I'm looking forward to sharing with you someday is a love for sports and games.  It is currently football season and I've been using a football term to describe how close we are to having you with us and how excited we are.  We are in the "Baby Red Zone."  The red zone is the end of the football field where a team pulls out all the stops (music and music terms are going to be fun to share with you too) to make sure they can get into the end zone and score.  We are so close to being together and your Mommy and I have been taking as much care of you as we can.  We've got your room ready to go, your clothes folded, crib set-up, and just yesterday we installed your car seat so you can come home with us.

Many others are excited to have you join us too and right now we have our families and friends and people we don't even know that well praying that God would bless you and Mommy with a safe delivery.  Every thing we do in the Baby Red Zone is an important part of preparing for you to come and we know that the best thing we can do is to stay connected with our heavenly father.  God is the glue that holds our family together and we are so happy that He has blessed us with you.  We know that you will always be in His care, but we are ready to have a new role in caring for you as well.

Stay safe and come to us soon Kayleigh girl!  God bless.

-Your Doting Daddy

40 Weeks, Salted Caramel Mocha Frappuccinos, and Inducing

Dear Kayleigh,

What a weird last few days it's been.

I went to the chiropractor on Wednesday. She adjusted my back, and just like that, the pain was gone. Yesterday was the first time in weeks that I woke up and thought, "I could walk a mile right now! Let's go!"

And go we did. Last night, Dad and I walked 1.5 miles in a hopeful effort to get you to come. Today was your due date, and we were sure hoping it wouldn't pass by uneventfully.

We walked to the Starbucks down the street from our apartment, and as a reward, we treated ourselves to drinks. They were passing out samples of the Salted Caramel Mocha Frappuccino, and it was really good! I ordered it in a tall--the first "coffee drink" I've ever ordered at Starbucks. I'm a tea girl. An herbal tea girl. If I don't order tea at Starbucks, I get a Strawberries 'n' Creme or a Frozen Strawberry Lemonade. Never coffee.

Coffee gives me the jitters. It makes me antsy and ridiculously hyper. I don't know what possessed me to order the mocha frappe last night, but wow! Like mother, like daughter. You were wired. I felt like I was a human pinball machine. For hours after I had my drink, you were bouncing around inside of me. I don't think I'll be doing that again :-)

We had our 40 week appointment today. Before we went, we walked another 1.5 miles. I was really hoping that walking 3 miles in the last 24 hours would get things going so that you would decide to come soon. Not so lucky, I guess. Dr. Morales didn't note any change in my progress from a week ago. 50% effaced, cervix still completely closed. He said it could be a few more weeks, at this point, if we were to let things go naturally. He scheduled us for an induction on Monday. I was crushed.

Even though I've planned all along to have an epidural, I wanted to do everything else as naturally as possible. No c-sections, no inductions. The ideas of both of them scare me. I'll just have to trust in God, Kayleigh Girl. He turned you around when we thought we would have to do a c-section; I can trust Him to be with us every step of the way through your delivery.

As things stand, Dad and I will head to the hospital around midnight on Sunday night so that they can induce me at 1am. Dr. Morales said it will probably be a very long journey--you might not even be born until Tuesday. Isn't it ironic that the very thing I've tried to avoid is what most likely will happen? Kayleigh Girl, you may very well be born on my 25th birthday.

I've struggled all along with the idea of you having to share a birthday in such close vicinity to mine. I'm a big believer that every child should have their own special day, and I never want your birthday to have to be "shared" with mine. I always want you to have your own cake, your own birthday party, your own celebration. And now, you'll either be born the day before, or on my birthday. Oh well! I promise to always make sure your birthdays are special. And if a beautiful baby girl is handed to me on September 27th this year, I'll consider it the most wonderful birthday gift I could ever receive.

Well, it's after 2:30 in the morning right now. I don't know if you picked up on my anxiety today, but neither of us has been able to sleep tonight, Munchkin. You've been stretching, hiccupping, and pushing around in your cramped space all night. It's crazy to realize that after tonight, there is only one more "normal" night where you will be inside of me. Sunday night/ Monday morning will be anything but normal for either of us, but I'm praying that God will keep us both strong, and bring you to Daddy's arms and mine soon. I can't believe how soon I'll be holding you, my sweet little one. It puts a smile on my face.

I love you!

Sweet dreams.

Love, Mom

A Perfect Day

Dear Kayleigh,

Yesterday was the day Daddy and I have been looking forward to for a long time as our last "Date Day" before you arrive. Up until two weeks ago, I had planned for this past Thursday (9/15) to be my last day of work (I'm so glad I caved and ended a week early! I would have been no good at school this week!) Why did I plan to end on a Thursday instead of a Friday? Because Fridays are Dad's day off [well, in theory, anyway!]

We guarded this Friday with our lives. Originally, we had planned on doing something like going to the Getty Center or the Los Angeles Arboretum--but by the begi

nning of last week, we both knew that I wasn't going to be up for anything that included a lot of walking.

Instead, we decided to do something I've been yearning to do for a long time: go to the beach.

It was a wonderful day!

We began it with an OB appointment (you little bugger, you're so content in there that Dr. Brady said you're probably not coming for at least another week) and then we drove to Newport to visit Papa Don in the nursing facility where he is currently rehabilitating.

Gramma got there just after we did, and we had a wonderful visit with the two of them.

I wish you could have seen how bright-eyed and smiley Papa got every time we mentioned you! It was so much fun to see his excitement. It's crazy to think that the next time we go visit them, we'll be bringing you along, too!

After our time with Gramma and Papa Davis, Daddy and I headed to our favorite bagel place in Corona Del Mar--Bruegger's Bagels on Goldenrod Ave. Ever since Dad and I started dating, Corona Del Mar was our special place. We'd go there when school got to be too much, we'd go there on quiet Sunday afternoons, we'd go to watch the sun set.

Here's a look through the years at our favorite place!
The first time Dad and I went to Corona Del Mar together--November 15th, 2006--a month before we began dating! With Kellie Kotraba and Dustin Gross (Auntie Kim took the picture)

Taking advantage of a cancelled orchestra rehearsal, March 2008

A week before our wedding, 2008

Our first Valentine's Day as a married couple, 2009

January 2010

And almost every time we went, we stopped at Bruegger's Bagels first. There's just something about sitting on the sand with a warm, creamy bagel and the love of your life. It's a perfect combination.

Aaaanyway, back to yesterday!

It was a perfect day. It was 20 degrees cooler at the coast than it was at home yesterday. I LOVED it!

There was a dad at the beach with his two little girls doing a photo shoot. They were the cutest things! It made Dad and me excited to think about times like this with you :-)

We loved talking about how next time we come to the beach, we'll be carrying you in our arms! I hope we are able to give you many, many opportunities to go to the beach as you grow up. The ocean is such a part of who I am, and it's become such a special part of Dad's and my relationship. We can't wait to share that with you!

We love you, Kayleigh Girl!
